Armodafinil is used in patients with excessive sleepiness from sleep apnea, narcolepsy or shift work disorder.
General information
Armodafinil is a wakefulness-promoting agent and it affects certain chemicals in the brain that may affect sleep. This drug enhances wakefulness in individuals however it doesn't make up for the loss of sleep one may be experiencing. Use armodafinil as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions. The recommended dosage of armodafinil tablets for patients with OSA or narcolepsy is 150 mg to 250 mg taken orally once a day as a single dose in the morning. The recommended dosage of armodafinil tablets for patients with SWD is 150 mg taken orally once a day as a single dose approximately 1 hour prior to the start of their work shift.
Armodafinil may cause dizziness or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use armodafinil with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. Do not drink alcohol or use medicines that may cause drowsiness (e.g., sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using armodafinil as it may cause serious side effects. Use armodafinil with caution in the elderly asa they may be more sensitive to its effects.
Do not use armodafinil if you are allergic to any ingredient in armodafinil or to modafinil, if you have a history of developing a rash after taking armodafinil or modafinil, if you have a history of certain heart or heart valve problems (e.g., mitral valve prolapse, left ventricular hypertrophy), if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding, if you have chest pain (angina), heart problems, or high blood pressure, or if you have had a heart attack.
Possible side effect
The most common side effects are dizziness, headache, nausea or trouble sleeping. Seek medical attention right away if any of these severe side effects occur: allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty swallowing or breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, throat, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); chest pain; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; mental, mood, or behavior changes (e.g., aggression, agitation, anxiety, depression, exaggerated sense of well-being, hallucinations, irritability, nervousness); muscle or joint pain; suicidal thoughts or actions; swelling of the legs.
Drug interactions
Be extra carefully and let your doctor know if you take erythromycin or ketoconazole, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, or rifampin, anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam), clomipramine, hydantoins (e.g., phenytoin), omeprazole, or propranolol, cyclosporine, hormonal contraceptives (e.g., birth control pills), midazolam.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of armodafinil, take it as soon as possible. If you do not remember until late afternoon or evening, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once.
Store armodafinil at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep armodafinil out of the reach of children and away from pets.
